Two-In-One Drill Fluid Additive Creates Super Muds

COSTA MESA, California — Designed and engineered to make its original downhole lubricant even more effective for operators, ProOne scientists introduced Diamond Dust two-in-one drill fluid additive as the company’s second major technological breakthrough, which began with XPL+ eight years ago.

What occurred technologically during that period? First, XPL+ redefined drilling lubrication with film strength fifty times that of conventional lubricants. That strength delivered a lengthy capabilities list including friction reduction exceeding 70%, 50% torque and drag reduction, greatly improved ROP and more. Then, results this good made tribologists ponder: “What if we combined our leading lubrication technology with an innovative powder asphalt that inhibits shale and delivers fluid loss control?” And from the lab came the two-in-one conditioner.

Not just anybody could develop what was expected by ProOne executives, so they brought in a game-changing innovator, the former head of R&D at a major oil company with years of knowledge in unique asphalt formulations. The result generated a quick, positive reaction in the field among drilling engineers and drill site personnel collectively saying “It’s turning ordinary muds into super muds.”

How? It’s a bonus for drilling rigs because combining the asphalt product with XPL+ provides all the asphalt properties plus exceptional lubricity. Most operators buy Diamond Dust as a replacement for other sulfonated asphalts since it adds lubricity where the others have none.

Several key product features drew that “super muds” comment, in addition to shale inhibition and controlling fluid loss:

  • In competitive tests called for by major oil companies, the product at a low 1.5% concentration performed better than others at 7.5
  • In coefficient of friction reduction its lower concentration had the practical effect at drill sites of providing stronger performance using less product

In the ongoing technological evolution of enhancing muds for optimal downhole lubrication, it is also significant that the product is easily dispersed in any mud, whether water-based or oil-based and benefits not only laterals but also verticals and curves. Of particular importance is that the product is an EP (Extreme Pressure) lubricant, which is how XPL+ lubricant really earned its name in the field. It accomplishes the seemingly improbable, migrating toward extreme heat and pressure instead of away from extremes. In a friction test, bearings subjected to extreme pressure incurred severe damage at 4,000 lbs/psi compared to the ProOne technology’s minimal damage at 50 times that pressure.

Improved drilling operations

Operators and their drilling engineers are typically most interested in not only product performance but how that plays out in time and money savings. In addition to the above-referenced key attributes, including saving money, Diamond Dust:

  • Considerably reduces bit balling and wear
  • Noticeably reduces torque and drag as well as differential sticking
  • Creates a filter cake which is tough, thin and slick
  • Reduces drill string corrosion
  • Offers an improved response to seepage and enables LCM control

Owing directly to technologically being a multi-purpose product, operators can now reduce (or completely replace) e.g., wall cake enhancers, wetting agents, gilsonite and/or sulfonated asphalt. Also, the only daily maintenance requirements are 1-2 lbs/bbl. Apart from performance it should not go unnoticed that the product is also carrying on the XPL+ product tradition of eco-friendliness. Per strict international standards it is quickly and fully biodegradable and offshore is completely non-toxic to marine life.

From the lab, through intensive testing and into field application, Diamond Dust is doing what operators never expected when facing the issue of “Why change my mud additive? Basically, muds are muds.” Now more and more well-site results are showing that this next-gen technology is actually a game-changer for drilling mud, according to drillers.

Fish-Friendly Downhole Drilling Lubricant Reduces Need for Oil-Based Mud

Costa Mesa, California, October 11, 2012 – ProOne’s Drilling Fluid has been demonstrated to be “non-hazardous to aquatic life” while it’s high temperature lubricating capabilities in water-based “mud” (WBM) exceeds those of typical oil-based mud (OBM). For drill rig owners, this means not having to sacrifice lubricating and rate of penetration characteristics while significantly reducing drilling costs and environmental risks. Having passed several of the most stringent U.S. (LC50) and Canadian (Microtox D50) test for aquatic safety, ProOne’s Drilling Fluid works with WBM and outperforms OBM in many situations where an OBM is needed but not feasible or permitted.

The LC50 test for aquatic toxicity determines the lethal concentration (LC) of a material at which 50% of the specimens (fish or crustaceans) die when exposed to it for 96 hours. In suspended particulate phase (SSP) testing, ProOne was tested in a water-based mud mixture with a No. 7 drilling fluid. A minimum 30,000ppm is required to pass and the industry prefers 150,000ppm. At a 3% concentration ProOne Drilling Fluid achieved 470,000ppm level, 15 times the margin of safety. At a 5% concentration ProOne achieved a 240,000ppm level, 7 times the margin of safety. During the tests, at all SSP and lubricant concentration, all of the fish specimens survived.

It was further determined that the LC50 rating of the ProOne’s Drilling Fluid is greater than 750mg/L where materials with and LC50 above 500 mg/L are considered “non-hazardous” to aquatic life. In contrast, No. 2 diesel fuel (the primary constituent of oil-based mud) is highly toxic to aquatic life and humans and contains suspected carcinogens.

California drilling lube company ProOne sets up shop in Houston

Molly Ryan Houston Business Journal Reporter, October 19, 2012ProOne, a fast-growing California-based lubricant developer, is set to move into the Houston market to supply energy companies with an environmentally friendly lubricant used for oil and gas drilling operations.

After signing a distribution agreement this month with Houston-based National Oilwell Varco Inc. (NYSE: NOV), ProOne plans to open a Houston sales office in early 2013 with about six employees. Later that year, the company plans to move its drilling division headquarters from Costa Mesa, Calif., to the city as well. After the move, ProOne officials said they will be closer to key customers and will ramp up plans

Drilling Fluid Lubricant Meets Stringent Ultimate Biodegradability Requirements

Costa Mesa, California, October 29, 2012 – ProOne,Inc. announces today that its drilling fluid lubricant is both readily and ultimately biodegradable as defined by stringent international standards. The biodegradability of materials used in drilling fluids is a significant issue in terms of water and environmental contamination risks, site remediation costs and waste disposal. In addition to being biodegradable, ProOne’s drilling fluid lubricant is also non-toxic to aquatic life, as the company recently announced.

“This announcement of ‘ultimate biodegradability’ as well as the LC50 ‘Fish Kill’ test, shows we are clearly positioned to look at offshore applications of our technology,” said Elton Alderman, President and CEO of ProOne.  “Our technology platform XPL+ is performing superbly in the Bakken, Permian and other basins, but we have an even bigger advantage when we get to offshore applications.”

Biodegradability refers to the time and completeness with which a substance breaks down into the basic elements of water and carbon dioxide in the environment. Tested in accordance with OECD 301B standards, ProOne’s drilling fluid lubricant achieved the “Readily Biodegradable” and “Ultimately Biodegradable” classifications. The “Readily” and “Ultimately” classifications are limited to those materials that break down most quickly and completely.

ProOne Launches New Fuel Maximizer

ProOne Introduces New Synthetic Grease

Costa Mesa, CA – ProOne, Inc. announced that it has developed a fully synthetic, pumpable grease which offers extreme temperature performance and is also approved for Food Grade applications.

ProOne’s new Synthetic EP-1 Grease was originally designed to meet the demanding conditions in Alaska where lubricants have to operate at extremely low temperatures. The product will perform extraordinarily well at temperatures as low as -65F and will also operate at high temperatures up to 650F. ProOne Products Certified by NSF as Food Grade
